Since the
beginning at Crenshaw High School in South Central Los
Angeles, Food From The ‘Hood’s, “Student Managers” have been
committed to using company profits for higher education. All
work is valued equally. These young entrepreneurs learn what
is needed to operate every part of the business.
Students
accumulate points for each hour they work. Garden work,
company meetings and media relations tasks carry equal point
value. Based upon the percentage of total points earned by
each student, the “profits” are awarded as scholarships to
the participating student’s education fund. Each graduating
senior is eligible to receive funds for post secondary
education. To date, over 77 program participants have
completed high school with over 20 graduating from college–
aided in part by Food From The ‘Hood.
This
grassroots organization stresses development of values,
self-discipline and socially responsible business practices
through experience. Educating by example, Food from The
‘Hood strives to use vendors within the community that best
exemplify ethical business practices. |
